Alden F. Cohen is a distinguished double bassist and educator from San Francisco, recognized for both his onstage artistry and his dedication to teaching. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Institute and a Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
As a professional double bassist in the Bay Area, Cohen has performed with leading ensembles, serving as Assistant Principal Bass with the Oakland Symphony and Principal Bass with the Santa Cruz County Symphony. He is a current member of the Berkeley Symphony and Modesto Symphony. He has appeared as Acting Principal Bass with the Fresno Symphony, Symphony Napa Valley, Pacific Chamber Symphony, San Francisco Lyric Opera, and West Bay Opera. His performance highlights include solo appearances alongside San Francisco Symphony Bassist Stephen Tramontozzi at the renowned San Francisco Bass Bash.
With over two decades of teaching experience, Cohen is known for guiding students in developing strong daily routines, organizational skills, and goal-oriented practice habits. His holistic approach blends technical mastery with critical thinking and artistic growth. Many of his students have gone on to win auditions for prestigious ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. His passion lies in helping both children and adults discover the joy of playing the music they love.
Beyond performance and teaching, Cohen is an accomplished musical arranger, publicist, and music theory instructor. He is the author of the 2021 eBook Mastering Double Bass Shifting, now a print edition on Amazon, and Double Bass: Essential Practice Techniques: 30 Methods to Help You Reach Your Goals. He has contributed to projects such as the remastering of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score for the Oakland Ballet and arranging music for weddings and special events.
